By Randy Hammons Editor at ringside TUNICA, MS - In a workmanlike performance, Atlanta's Nicole Woods won a convincing unanimous decision victory over Camden, AR's Kita Watkins in the July 18 welterweight co-feature on Prize Fight Boxing's "Fights at the Fitz" card from Fitzgerald's Casino and Hotel. Woods (9-4, 1 KO) set the tone in the opening round. Stiff jabs from Woods were followed by dropping accurate right hands to the head as Watkins (3-5, 1 KO) charged in. Woods scored with three- and four-punch combinations throughout the fight. Woods won 60-54 on all three scorecards.
As Watkins wore down, Woods managed to score with uppercuts, especially in the fifth round. In the sixth, Woods was her busiest and scored with solid right and left hooks to the body. Near the end of the fight, Woods connected with a right hook in her own corner. The fight ended with Woods connecting with a trio of solid shots. There were no knockdowns in the fight. "I was strong with my jab and let her run into my right hand," said Woods, who debuted two years ago by winning a a 4-round unanimous decision (40-36 x 3) over Watkins. "(Her right hand) was really successful. She was a tough fighter who wouldn't go down. "My hooks were getting in there and I hit her with a couple of uppercuts," Woods said. "That was something we worked on in the gym because she leans into it. I think I hurt her a couple of times on the ropes." "I was a little gassed in the sixth round," Watkins said. "She is a pretty good boxer. I'm ready tomorrow to fight her again if she wants to. I wish her all the luck in her career."
