Lafayette, LA's Jessie Fletcher, won the 80-pound, 10-11-year-old age group at the Title National Championship Tournament in Ripley, TN on June 5. A decorated amateur boxer, Fletcher defeated Memphian Eugene Collins by RSC in the second round. Fletcher only started boxing in January of 2009, but has won four championships in his age group. Whitfield TKOs Espinoza To Claim NABO Flyweight Belt |

From Staff Reports AUGUSTA, GA - Rayonta "Stingray" Whitfield brought down the house in his hometown Saturday night (Feb. 27) in the main event with the vacant NABO Flyweight championship on the line. Whitfield snatched the championship with a 9th-round TKO of San Diego's Sergio Espinoza at the Bell Auditorium. Whitfield close the show at 2:49 of the ninth round. The main event was scheduled for 10 rounds. It was the second straight victory for Whitfield (24-1, 12 KOs) since his TKO (10) loss to reigning WBO Flyweight champion Omar Andres Narvaez (31-0-2, 19 KOs). It was only the second stoppage loss for Espinoza (16-7-1, 5 KOs) in his career.
The co-feature on the card saw Wauchula, FL lightweight Edner "Cherry Bomb" Cherry knock out Irvington, NJ's Delvin Placencia. The KO came at 55 seconds of the second round. The bout was scheduled for eight rounds. A native of the Bahamas, the fight was Cherry's third straight as a lightweight since losing a unanimous decision in 2008 to Timothy Bradley in a bid for Bradley's WBC Light Welterweight championship. Against Placencia, Cherry (27-6-2, 15 KOs) weighed 132.75 pounds. The defeat was the third straight for Placencia (15-3, 6 KOs). Quebec City, Canada lightweight Pier Olivier Cote won a 6-round unanimous decision over Coon Rapids, MN's Willshaun Boxley. Cote (10-0, 6 KOs) won on the official scorecards by scores of 57-56 x 2 and 58-55. Boxley dropped to 5-5, 3 KOs. It was the fifth straight loss for Boxley. Another Quebec City resident, Mikael Zewski, won his debut with a 3rd-round TKO of South Carolina's Kevin Kibler (0-1-1). Zewski weighed 150.5 pounds, while Kibler weighed 146.25. The fight was scheduled for four. A 4-round welterweight scrap had Winter Haven, FL's Joseph Elegele improve to 5-0, 3 KOs after winning a unanimous decision (40-36 x 3) over Lutcher, LA's Deon Nash (5-11, 1 KO). Las Vegas welterweight Michael Finney won his pro debut with a first-round TKO of Miami's Dimitris Labatos. Finney is a native of Smith Station, AL. Labatos fell to 0-2. Michigan super middleweight J'Leon Love (2-0, 2 KOs) TKO'd Ohio's Rufus Defibaugh (0-1) at 47 seconds of the first round. |
