RIPLEY, TN - Ten-year-old Jessie "The Giant Killer" Fletcher, a rising 5th-grader at S.J. Montgomery Elementary School, took the 80-pound, 10-11-year-old age group Saturday night (June 5) in the Title National Boxing Tournament
Fletcher forced the referee to halt the bout in the second round after pinning opponent Memphian Eugene Collins, on the ropes and landing a flurry of unanswered punches, which had Collins wobbly.
Fletcher, who fights out of Lafayette, LA's Ragin' Cajun Boxing Club, added the Title championship belt to his collection. Since having his first amateur bout in January of 2009, Fletcher won the 2009 Governor's Games championship, the Louisiana/Mississippi Silver Gloves championship, the Louisiana State Golden Gloves and the USA Wrestling Louisiana championship in his age and weight group. Fletcher was also third at the USA Wrestling National Championship in Cedar Falls, IA earlier this year.
"I feel really good, and I know that my coaches are proud of me, and my family is very excited. Now I will get ready to defend my Governor's Games championship later this month. All my friends will be excited to see the belt I won and I can't wait to show it off at the gym," Fletcher said.
The Louisiana Governor's Games start June 25 and run through June 27 at the Sunset, LA SportAtorium. The first two nights have a 6 p.m. start time, while bouts on the 27th begin at 2 p.m.
