Lafayette, LA's Jessie Fletcher, won the 80-pound, 10-11-year-old age group at the Title National Championship Tournament in Ripley, TN on June 5. A decorated amateur boxer, Fletcher defeated Memphian Eugene Collins by RSC in the second round. Fletcher only started boxing in January of 2009, but has won four championships in his age group. At 5-foot-3, Kansas City, MO light middleweight Melisenda Perez is used to having to fight much taller opponents. Despite the height disadvantage, Perez has managed to be a force in her division. Perez won a 4-round unanimous decision over Batesville, AR's April Ward Saturday night (July 10) on Les Bonano's "Battle On The Bay" card at Hollywood Casino. Read more...

Kenner Boxing Club presents "Amateur Boxing At Its Finest" card on Saturday, March 6 from the Old Greenlawn Gym, located at 1801 Williams Blvd. between the old fire station and Rally's. Weigh-ins are scheduled from Noon to 3 p.m. Doors open to the general public at 2:30 p.m., with the first fight scheduled for 4 p.m. Trophies will be awarded. General admission tickets are $10, $5 for children 12 years and under. For further information, contact coach Billy Fleetwood at 504-468-7594. Also, the Mississippi Golden Gloves Tournament is scheduled for March 20 at the Pearl (MS) Boxing Club gym . Admission is $15 for adults, with standing room only tickets going for $10. Admission for children under 8 years of age is $5.
Action in the ring begins at 5:30 p.m. Three local boxers who are sure to please include Joel Montoya (125 pounds), Raejon Higginbottom (119 pounds) and Joey Bryant (132 pounds). Higginbottom and Montoya recently participated in the Silver Gloves Regionals in Little Rock. They both made it to the semifinal round before losing.
