|
From Staff Reports TEXARKANA, AR - Charles Hatley showed how he got to be the 2007 United States Amateur welterweight champion on the Jan. 20 McMurry Productions boxing card from Shooters Sports Bar. Like his previous eight opponents, Hatley quickly mowed through his out-manned opponent and earned a first-round TKO over local boxer Jimmy Baker, who oddly enough was making his professional debut against the power-punching super middleweight. Hatley, from nearby Dallas, recorded the TKO at 2:15 of the opening round. Every fight on the eight-bout card was scheduled for four rounds. Another Dallas super middleweight, Larry Smith, was also successful. Smith recorded his seventh straight victory as he knocked out local fighter Antwan Burris at 1:14 of the first round. Smith improved to 7-1, 6 KOs. Burris evened his record at 1-1, 1 KO. In a cruiserweight battle, Houston's Larry Pryor moved to .500 as he TKO'd Fouke, AR's Shawn Morrison at 2:10 of the second round. Pryor won his second straight and moved to 6-6, 4 KOs. Morrison was making his pro debut. Alicio "Iron" Castaneda also had too much experience for local fighter Devenere Rose, who was making his pro debut. Fighting at 140 pounds, Castaneda forced Rose to retire after the second round. Castaneda, from Cut & Shoot, TX, improved to 8-1, 5 KOs. Houston heavyweight Justin Jones wasted little time n his bout against local Buddy Cochrane. The 256-pound Jones (5-0-1, 3 KOs) took out the 220-pound Cochrane (0-3) at 2:15 of the opening round. Skip Scott, also a Houston heavyweight, Skip Scott, TKO'd local Cody Obenosky at 2:40 of the second round. Scott (5-1, 4 KOs) won his second straight bout. Obenosky was making his pro debut. Houston light middleweight Jimmy Guzman won by TKO at 2:17 of the opening round over local David Payton. Guzman wet to 2-0, 1 KO. Payton fell to 0-3. Shreveport, LA's Blake Franklin, who dropped 23 pounds from his last fight to weigh 128 against local William Cloyd, won by TKO t 2:20 of the second round. Franklin is 3-3, 1 KO.
