Guerrero Headlines 'The Best Of The Best' Card On July 16 PDF Print E-mail
From Prize Fight Boxing

SOUTHAVEN, MS - Prize Fight Boxing is proud to announce an unprecedented night night of boxing coming to the Mid-South as it unveils "The Best Of The Best," on July 16 live from

The DeSoto Civic Center and televised on Showtime.
This 6-bout card will feature four of the most talented young fighters in the world today fighting in separate bouts and putting their titles on the line.
"The Best Of The Best" is headlined by NABA Middleweight champion Fernando Guerrero (18-0, 15 KOs), ranked No. 4 in the world. He will face the toughest test of his young career as he goes head to head with Ishe "Sugar Shay" Smith (21-4, 9 KOs) in the 12-round main event that will catapult the winner into sure world title contention.

Guerrero, a powerful southpaw, is considered by many boxing pundits to be one of the top young fighters in boxing and will look to use the veteran Smith as his ticket to stardom on a world-wide stage.

Guerrero is coming off an impressive 2nd-round stoppage of Chicago's Michael Walker this past April on Showtime in Maryland. Walker had not been stopped or knocked down in his previous 24 fights.

However, Smith is no stranger to big fights or big stages and needs Guerrero to move him back into the rankings and in line for title opportunities himself. Smith has fought the best of the best, starred on the reality TV series "The Contender" and has been a top-notch fighter for most of the past decade. This main event shapes up to be a show-stopper for sure.

Also on the card is 2008 United States Olympic alternate "Showtime" Shawn Porter (15-0, 12 KOs). The NABO Junior Middleweight champion, Porter is also one of the brightest young stars in boxing today. Porter has appeared on network television five times already and has shot up to No. 14 in the WBO world rankings.

Porter is no secret to Mid-South fight fight fans as he has fought nine times between Memphis and Tunica. Porter's action-packed, all-out style will be on display in the feature bout of the evening.

Also, 2008 United States Olympic team captain Gary Russell Jr. (9-0, 6 KOs) will be featured on the televised portion of the card. Mid-South boxing fans will remember Russell from his dominating performance on the ESPN card this past April from The New Daisy Theatre in Memphis as he made quick work of Carlos Diaz.

Russell also fought at Fitzgerald's Casino on January as he put on a stellar performance against David Orosco. A southpaw, Russell is about a complete a package as you will see in boxing today and will be fighting for his first title on this card. His hand speed is unmatched and he offers power in both hands.

Last, but not least, on the televised portion of the card will be Philadelphia undefeated welterweight Lanard Lane (2-0, 7 KOs). Lane s also no stranger to the Mid-South as he fought a fan-friendly fight against veteran John Brown on the April ESPN event from The New Daisy.

A Houston, TX firefighter, Lane brings with him a level of tenacity in the ring that will once again leave fans at a loss for words. Lane fights from bell to bell at a pace that wilts normal men.
