Despite Frustrations, McClain Wins Decision Over Bercier |
|

|
From Staff Reports ATLANTA - John "Yahya" McClain said it exactly won't go down as a boxing classic, but he'll take the victory nevertheless. McClain, the owner of Absoloot Boxing & Fitness Gym in Atlanta, promoted the Saturday (Jan. 23) card at The Pit where he headlined the four-bout card in a 6-round cruiserweight match against Montana's Leo Bercier. The 42-year-old McClain still had too much for the 28-year-old Bercier as McClain won 60-54 on all three official scorecards. "It wasn't the most exciting fight since one guy was trying to fight and the other guy was just trying to survive," McClain told Deep South Boxing. "It's hard to knock somebody out when they're just covering up." McClain said he tried his best to take out Bercier. "I cracked the guy with some hard blows to the head. I hit him with some tough body shots," McClain said. McClain, a former WBC Continental Americas Light Heavyweight and WBU Cruiserweight world champion, improved to 25-7-2, 17 KOs. Bercier dropped his third straight, and four out of his last five, and fell to 8-12-1, 4 KOs. Also on the card, McClain's light heavyweight prospect, Atlanta's Donta Woods, knocked out Columbus, MS trialhorse Shannon Miller at 22 seconds of the first round. The bout was scheduled for six. Woods has won all five of his bouts by knockout. McClain said Woods stopped Miller with a left to the body, followed by a right hand to the head. "Shannon had no answer for him and was counted out (by referee Brian Stutts)," McClain said. Miller (24-46-8, 18 KOs) lost his fourth straight. He has dropped nine of his last 10, all by knockout. A light welterweight scrap that was scheduled for six between Atlanta's Jamar Saunders and Selma, AL's John Willoughby went the distance with Saunders recording a unanimous decision victory. Saunders (3-5-1, 1 KO) won 60-54 on two cards, and 59-55 on the third. Willoughby fell to 1-2, 1 KO. In middleweight action, Georgia's Omar Bell knocked out Savannah, GA's Jose Felix at 1:22 of the second round. The bout was scheduled for four. "Bell caught Felix with a right hand that put him down," McClain said. "That was the only knockdown of the fight." Bell improved to 7-1, 5 KOs, while Felix dropped to 10-8-2, 3 KOs. McClain said his next show is tentatively scheduled for the end of March.
