Ashworth, Kinney Suffer Decision Defeats On Separate Cards |
From Staff Reports Two Deep South boxers suffered decision defeats Friday night (Jan. 29) at separate venues. At Tingley Coliseum in Albuquerque, NM, Lake Charles, LA cruiserweight Roy Ashworth dropped a 6-round unanimous decision to local fighter "Mad" Max Heyman. And Baton Rouge welterweight Rickey Kinney suffered a similar fate in a 4-rounder against Las Vegan Jesse Vargas at the Hard Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Heyman dominated Ashworth from the opening bell and won handily, winning a shutout (60-52) on all three cards. Heyman (23-10-4, 13 KOs) entered the fight with the 37-year-old Ashworth off a TKO (2) loss in 2007 to Houston's Chris Henry (24-2, 19 KOs) in a bout for the vacant NABF Light Heavyweight title. Ashworth lost his third straight and dropped to 5-7, 1 KO. He has lost five of his last six fights. In the main event on the card, Lancaster, CA bantamweight Chris Avalos (15-0, 12 KOs) knocked out Puerto Rico's Jose Nieves (17-2-3, 8 KOs) at 2:20 of the fourth round. The fight was scheduled for 10 rounds. In Las Vegas, Kinney fell to 4-2, 3 KOs after losing 40-36 on all three cards. Vargas moved to 8-0, 3 KOs.
