Lafayette, LA welterweight Brad Solomon (12-0, 4 KOs) fights for his first major championships Tuesday (Aug. 24) when he meets Puerto Rico's Wilfredo Negron (26-14-1, 19 KOs) at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, FL, just up the road from Miami. The bout is for the vacant WBA International and vacant WBC Latino belts. In his last bout in June, Solomon decisioned previously unbeaten Kenny Galarza over 10.

Amatuer Boxing
Lafayette, LA's Jessie Fletcher, won the 80-pound, 10-11-year-old age group at the Title National Championship Tournament in Ripley, TN on June 5. A decorated amateur boxer, Fletcher defeated Memphian Eugene Collins by RSC in the second round. Fletcher only started boxing in January of 2009, but has won four championships in his age group. At 5-foot-3, Kansas City, MO light middleweight Melisenda Perez is used to having to fight much taller opponents. Despite the height disadvantage, Perez has managed to be a force in her division. Perez won a 4-round unanimous decision over Batesville, AR's April Ward Saturday night (July 10) on Les Bonano's "Battle On The Bay" card at Hollywood Casino. Read more...

HOUSTON - Three female Deep South boxers who are on the Saturday (July 11) Calm Before the Storm Promotion weighed in on Friday.

New Orleans' light welterweight Tiffany Junot (5-2, 3 KOs) meets Pine Bluff, AR's Nikita McCargo (0-2) in a 4-round light welterweight bout. Also, Nashville's April Richards (0-2) fights Houston's Vashon Living (0-1) in a 4-round super middleweight scrap.

Saturday's bouts are at the San Miguel Arena. Friday's weights are below:

Tiffany Junot (139) vs. Nikita McCargo (137)
April Richards (162) vs. Vashon Living (163)
 
Ward's New Focus Is On Boxing Ring, Pro Debut PDF Print E-mail

After graduating from Sulphur Rock (AR) High School in 2003, April Ward has focused on a husband and two small children.

Now at 24, Ward's focus is a boxing ring. Se makes her pro debut on June 13 at the National Guard Armory in Batesville, AR. Ward meets Muldrow, OK's Chelsy Chapman (0-1) in a four-round middleweight fight on Brandon Foster's Bad Boy Promotions card.

Ward has no amateur experience to her credit and a short time to prepare for her debut. Despite the obstacles, Ward said she feels ready for the task at hand.

"I really never cared much for boxing until my friend, Kristen, got me into it. She was down at the gym working out and wanted me to come with her. I thought I would try it and I liked it," Ward said. "I caught on fast and really enjoy it."

Don't let the pretty face of 20-year-old Chelsy Chapman fool you. Stepping into a boxing ring turns the Muldrow, OK beauty into a beast.

"Whenever I show up, I'm ready to fight. And I'm coming to win," Chapman said.

At a tender age, Chapman always wanted to become a top female boxer. But she had a hard time convincing her mom to let her pursue her boxing career. As she got older, she was more determined than ever to enter the ring.

"I guess I inspired myself to want to box. Ever since I was little I have always wanted to be a boxer. But my mama kept saying, 'No, no, no. You will hurt your face.' But I got older and decided to do it anyway," Chapman said.

Chapman's manager, Bud Pitchford, is impressed with his boxer.
