Lafayette, LA's Jessie Fletcher, won the 80-pound, 10-11-year-old age group at the Title National Championship Tournament in Ripley, TN on June 5. A decorated amateur boxer, Fletcher defeated Memphian Eugene Collins by RSC in the second round. Fletcher only started boxing in January of 2009, but has won four championships in his age group. At 5-foot-3, Kansas City, MO light middleweight Melisenda Perez is used to having to fight much taller opponents. Despite the height disadvantage, Perez has managed to be a force in her division. From Damien St. Pierre District 6 Representative PEARL, MS - Hands of Stone Gym, out of Wilson, LA, and West Monroe Boxing Club each won three matches Saturday (March 20) in the Mississippi Golden Gloves competition at the Old Boys and Girls Club gym. In special awards, 23-year-old Gary Riley, of BREC Boxing Club, won his 132-pound match by points over Pearl Boxing Club's Pablo Gomez and was selected Fighter of the Night. (15-year-olds, 145 pounds) - Jamarquis Rogers, of ABC Boxing, defeated Pearl's Raejon Higginbottom on points. in their 15-year-old, 145-pound match. That bout was selected as the Fight of the Night. From Bryon Hurford Augusta (AR) Boxing Club AUGUSTA, AR - Augusta Boxing Club's "Cinderella Man," Nelson Roberson, used a strong third-round performance to earn a come-from-behind victory over Covington County, TN's C.J. Robinson here Saturday night (March 20) in the annual St. Patrick's show.
The bout earned both boxers the "Fight of the Night" Award. Pine Bluff, AR's Quincy Means won the Outstanding Boxer Award, while Covington County's Jamall Holland won the Sportsmanship trophy. Lafayette Ready To Host Louisiana Golden Gloves Championships |

From Ragin' Cajun Boxing Club LAFAYETTE, LA - The city of Lafayette and the Ragin' Cajun Amateur Boxing Club, in conjunction with the Lafayette Convention & Visitors Commission and the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, will host the annual Louisiana Golden Gloves amateur boxing championships March 26-28 at the N.P. Moss Middle School Gymnasium. The event could be a preview of bigger things to come, according to Ragin' Cajun Club coach and tournament coordinator, Beau Williford. The Lafayette entities will be making a bid in April to host the 2012 National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions, one of the nation's oldest and most esteemed amateur sporting events, and Williford said that a good showing at this year's state tournament could help with that proposal.
